One of the advantages of the French Defense is that White will find it difficult to secure an advantage with any move except 2. d4. It surprises me everytime I go up against a White player who didn't get the memo.

Of the alternatives you mentioned, only 2. d3 and 2. Sc3 could pose Black any problems at all. Black needs to decide on a certain setup against White's unusual strategy in these cases. The rest is pretty useless, especially 2. h3.

    Black equalizes easily.

in all cases you can play d5 and become a normal french game!

If you seek anti french lines, you must think about e4 e6 Qe2

I would still play Pd5 after c4. But different people do different things it just depends on your style and preference

Well, there's a cool setup against the KIA (2. d3) that goes something like this: c5/Nc6/g6/Bg7/Nge7/0-0 which is super solid against White's kingside attacking plans. Black keeps the option open to play the d-pawn to d6 as well as d5. Soon he'll unleash a monstrous queenside pawn storm with b5 and a5, supported by the Bg7. It's a fun position to play, with chances for both sides.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with 2. d3 d5. One possible setup to throw White off his game is to keep the c-pawn on c7, playing b6 and Bb7 instead. Possibly followed by 0-0-0 and the plan to attack on the kingside, where White usually plays.

Also, I personally prefer to respond to 1. e4 e6 2. e5 with 2. ...d6, challenging the white centre pawn immediately.

After 2. d5, White could play 3. d4 and move back into advance variation territory. That's fine for Black, but if you want to seriously question 2. e5, you'll have to play something more tricky.

    2. ...c5, leading to an advantageous Sicilian also looks strong. Heck, even the mad looking 2. ...f6 might be worth a try, planning to follow 3. d4 with 3. ...c5, and the White centre implodes.
