How do you follow sports?  Sports don't move.  In fact, sports isn't really even something you can follow, even if it DOES move.  Because Sports is just a word.  So unless there's the word "sports" on the run, no I am not following sports.

Do you know what a language is? Words represent ideas or things. Go back to 6th grade!

Of course, why would you literally 'follow' sports? Obviously, 'follow' in this sentence is not in the sense to 'go after.' In the sentence, follow means 'to monitor.'
