Hi,

I recently borrowed an Everyman "Starting out Kings Indian" CD ROm/book from a friend of mine. He recommended that I use CBlight to read it (as it has both the book as PDF and the games as files, so you can, effectively, "play through the book") - does anyone know if these can be used in SCID instead?

Nope, nope, nope. Oh well, I might just download CBlight (free) just to read it...

Personally, this is probably the best way for me to learn opening theory. I remember things far more easily by seeing the patterns rather than remembering the annotations.

It's a shame that SCID can't steal CB's thunder. The book's files are saved as CBA docs, which I'm assuming are only readable in Chessbase, so if SCID could steal that then it might be onto a winner ;-)

Glad to hear it worked for you. I don't remember exactly what it was but I remember being disappointed with the presentation in CBlight.
The way I use SCID in conjunction with books is to download the games from various sources and then change some of the info to reflect the book and author i.e.: I paste the author's name into [Round "?"] and type the page number where the game is found into [Event "?"]. Then I can sort the dBase by [Round] and [Event] and voila - I have a dBase list of my books and the games in them.
The nice thing about this is that when I'm using the [Tree] function in SCID to follow the moves of a game I am playing, it not only shows me a list of games which contain that position but also the book(s) and page number(s) where I can read about it.
