Please note that I scribbled down my plan in the Good Old Days before the sixth item was listed ;)

    (1)  Evaluation of my game. I think tactics is my strongest area in the sense that I do pretty well when solving tactics problems. The bad news is that a chess game is not a long series of obvious chess problems. My Openings are pretty weak but I am not interested in spending too much time on openings. My Endgames are pretty lame. There are lots of basic endgame techniques that are alien to me. My strategy also stinks mainly due to lack of experience. Ergo: Room for improvement!

    (2)  Identify needs. I think endgames are the key area to improvements. This is very much in line with the thoughts in some classical textbooks suggesting that the novice should start with endgames.

    (3)  Determine my priorities. Endgames will be the main focus of my studies. Most of the studies will be based on software.

    (4)  Set Goals. My goal is to (by the end of next year) have an established rating of at least 1500 in the following areas: Chess Mentor, CT-Art 3.0, Ranked games vs. Chessmaster, Advanced Chess School and Theory and Practice of Chess Endings. The rating goal will be re-evaluated during the summer vacation.

    (5)  Action Plan. A weekly dose of 100+ minutes of Chess Mentor or other software, at least one G/30 game per week, self-annotation of at least one slow game per month, carefully working through “Logical Chess Move by Move” during the year, carefully study “Weapons of Chess” and some suitable book on strategy (Modern Chess Strategy?) and playing a few unrated games focused on King’s Gambit. “just facts” is another top candidate on the reading list.
