French vs. Sicilian

Any thoughts on this? What playing styles do people have when they play the French, as opposed to the Sicilian?

Most French players are solid, positional, and/or counterattacking players.  Being one myself, I can say that I prefer to have a solid formation without a lot of tactical problems to be solved.  Many of the Sicilian lines are tactical and for that reason I avoid it.  That's not to say all French lines are positional.  The Winawer can be full of tactics, which is why I (at present) do not play the Winawer.

    Hope that helps.

Yeah, french players are normally more positional but still like counterattacks. In fact there can be plenty of tactics in a french position sometimes but to do well in the french you have to be comfortable with positional maneouvers and kowing when to attack the pawn chain or release the tension (when to take on d4 or e5). They like closed games of course.

Very interesting. Thanks for the input guys, I think that's all I need to know. I like closed games myself, so I think I'm going to continue giving the French a try. I bombed my first game with it, but I have a feeling that it will be my favorite response to e4 and d4 after awhile. :)
