I'm just wondering, since I've never been in a match like this before... How do they work exactly?

When you join a Team Match you are lined up highest to lowest ratings. And this is done for each team. It is an open match. So if u r 4th in the list then u would play there 4th player in the match whatever their rating is. Does that make cense?
