If you are like me you like metal bands such as: Disturbed, CoC, Twisted Sister, Guns N' Roses, Pantera etc.
Lets compare, post your top 5 favorite metal bands!
Mine are up there, but not in that order.........so lets ge some posts!
I like classical music, but once in a while I listen to old metal. I'm not familiar with the new metal bands. This is my top five: Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron maiden, AC/DC, Spinal Tap (I'm not kidding, I like Spinal Tap a lot).
I think there are no two metal fans alike, right?
"It's very pretty."
"It's a bit of a departure from what you normally play."
"It's part of a trilogy, a musical trilogy I'm working on in D minor which is the saddest of all keys, I find. People weep instantly when they hear it, and I don't know why."
"It's very nice."
"You know, just simple lines intertwining, you know, very much like - I'm really influenced by Mozart and Bach, and it's sort of in between those, really. It's like a Mach piece, really. It's sort of..."
"What do you call this?"
"Well, this piece is called "Lick My Love Pump". "
I've always found it quite strange that there should be such a link between heavy metal and classical but I guess it does copy some of the melodies, scales and motifs and lots of heavy metal bands were classically trained and a lot of the music is quite baroque. I would have to add the mighty Led Zeppelin to the list of course. Other than that I don't really like it that much as its abit too slow for me, I prefer thrash metal, or industrial or nu metal etc etc.
To be honest I'd hesitate to call the bands you listed "metal", but I think that's because I've delved progressively further into heavy music these past 7 years...I like joaoporto's choice of Opeth. They are a fantastic progressive band that deserves to be mentioned. I'd also like to put the band Meshuggah on there for tech metal, as well as old In Flames and Dark Tranquility for melodic metal. We could always spiral into strange hybrids like Despised Icon and The Red Chord as well, places I'm more familiar with in terms of heavy music, but I'd say this suffices.
Isn't it strange how people can say "metal" and be talking about such a diverse group of sounds?
That said, I think one of my favorite bands in this 'heavy' genre is Ion Dissonance check 'em www.myspace.com/iondissonance
