Anand reaches Sofia after 40-hour road journey

    Viswanathan Anand
NEW DELHI: World champion Viswanathan Anand on Tuesday reached Sofia after a strenuous 40-hour road journey from Germany as flights were cancelled due to the volcanic ash floating across European airspace.

The 40-year old world champion had requested to postpone the game by three days. But Anand's appeal to postpone his World chess championship match against Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria was rejected by the organising committee.

Anand is not used to travelling such distances on road and not giving a three day postponement could give challenger Topalov a significant advantage.

Anand had planned to reach the venue on April 16 which is one week before the first game on April 23. Now he arrived four days behind due to factors beyond his control.

Anand might miss the press conference but will attend the opening ceremony according to his wife Aruna Anand. Not rescheduling the games will mean Topalov could have the same advantage which Anatoly Karpov enjoyed in the World Title match at Lausanne in 1998.

"The news from us is that we reached here safely," said Aruna Anand on the phone.

Had Alexander Alekhine been in Anand's place, he would have sought a postponement of at least a week as world champions ruled and challengers were at the mercy of champions.

Sometimes a handicap is a better way to start a match and Anand can turn the disadvantage into a driving force in the 12-game series.

Earlier, the organising committee had received an e-mailed request for a three day postponement from Anand and also a word from FIDE about the situation.

However, the committee said they can postpone the press conference but cannot postpone the opening ceremony scheduled on April 21 at 6 pm as invitations to all official guests, sponsors, politicians, TV stations and the media was already sent and also many commercial contracts have been signed and there would be serious penalties if any changes is made.

The championship is to be formally inaugurated on April 21 with the first of the 14 games to begin on April 23.

CHENNAI: Viswanathan Anand has arrived in Sofia for his World Chess Championship match against Veselin Topalov starting next Friday.

Strangely, the hosts did not know when the Indian and his team checked into Hilton Hotel, where the World chess champion and his team would be staying during the event.

Obviously, Anand wanted to keep his arrival a secret and his plan went smoothly. He wanted to avoid the journalists at the airport because he had not still divulged the details of his seconds.

Anand and his team had trained at Sandaski in Bulgaria before the match. Though the Bulgarian officials had no idea of Anand's arrival, they confirmed on Saturday that the Indian had already checked into the team hotel.

Topalov: Anand can surprise me only with shamans

The world chess championship clash in Sofia will be the match of my life, says GM Veselin Topalov

The first move in the WCC match between Veselin Topalov and Vishy Anand will be made in Sofia’s Military Club on April 23. In an exclusive interview with the Standart, Veselin talks about how it feels to play for the world chess title on home ground.

    - Are you ready to play against Anand?
    - My preparation for this important match started in November last year and passed through several stages – Palma de Mallorca, the Canary islands and two weeks in the southern Bulgarian town of Sandanski. Everything’s normal for now.
    - Do you have the feeling that this will be the match of your life?
    - Probably yes.
    - The organizers have met all requirements of Anand, but he still refused to play according to the local rules.
    - I think Anand has adopted it as his strategy to reject all proposals of the Bulgarian organizers.
    - What are Anand’s strong points and weaknesses as a chess player?
    - He is an incredible talent, he has exceptional intuition and fast reactions, but he is forty years old and his shape isn’t as good as it was in his twenties. I guess he may have some problems with motivation.
    - How can Anand surprise you psychologically?
    - I will be surprised if he brings a few shamans in the hall.

Anand stuck in Frankfurt, wants title game put off

CHENNAI: Business travellers, tourists, heads of state and now even chess champion Viswanathan Anand have all been grounded by the huge ash cloud from an Icelandic volcano that has turned the skies of northern Europe into a no-fly zone.

Anand, stranded in Frankfurt from Saturday along with his team, has asked the World Chess Federation to postpone his upcoming world chess championship match against Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria by at least three days. The match to be held in Sofia was scheduled to begin on April 23.

"We were due to arrive at 13.05 on April 16 by fromFrankfurt to Sofia. We were in transit from Madrid... Unfortunately, from April 16, all flights have been cancelled," Anand said in a statement. "If the airspace in Germany opens, we will fly to Sofia."
