According to answers.com
'Chess today is a recognized sport of the International Olympic Committee. The first official World Chess Champion, Wilhelm Steinitz, claimed his title in 1886; the current World Champion is Viswanathan Anand'
According to Wikipedia
'Chess is a recognized sport by the International Olympic Committee with FIDE being the recognized International Sports Federation for chess since June 1999. As a member of the International Olympic Committee, FIDE adheres to its rules, including controversially having doping tests. The prospects of chess becoming an Olympic sporting event at some future date remain unclear. The naming of FIDE's team championship as the "Chess Olympiad" is of historical origin and implies no connection between this event and the Olympic Games'

CHESS is both SPORT and GAME. Webster's New World Dictionary on Power CD defines these two terms, as follows:
SPORT: (1) any activity or experience that gives enjoyment or recreation; pastime; diversion; (2) such an activity, esp. when competitive, requiring more or less vigorous bodily exertion and carried on, sometimes as a profession, according to some traditional form or set of rules, whether outdoors, as football, golf, etc., or indoors, as basketball, bowling, etc.; (3) fun or play.
GAME: 1 any form of play or way of playing; amusement; recreation; sport; frolic; play; 2 a) any specific contest, engagement, amusement, computer simulation, or sport involving physical or mental competition under specific rules, as football, chess, or war games b) a single contest in such a competition [to win two out of three games] c) a subdivision of a contest, as in a set in tennis; 7 any test of skill, courage, or endurance [the game of life]
