I read somwhere that the edge of space is moving away from us faster than the speed of light, surely this is not possible ?
Any body have any thoughts on the subject.

As far as I know the only time space expanded faster than the speed of light was for a very small duration right after the big bang.

The universe has expanded in such a way that parts of it are entirely concealed from each other, because we are limited to the parts that appear to be receding from us at less than the speed of light.

This came to mind when I read the post title...

sure, light is an electromagnetic distrubance, whats expanding our universe isnt light.
If a galaxy at the far distant edge of the universe were observed from earth here at the opposite side (relative to the universal center) it would appear to be moving faster than light speed. I made a post some months back about this very phenomenon:

Found this quote on the site below:
"There's a cosmic speed limit, 186,000 miles per second, also known as the speed of light. Nothing can exceed that speed. It's one of the best established principles in science. Believe it or not, travelling at near the speed of light transports you to the future."Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1269288/STEPHEN-HAWKING-How-build-time-machine.html#ixzz0wO7UZgwf

To move faster than light, we need to speed up light itself ;), that's the only way
Can phisical body's move faster than the speed of light. c= +- 299,000 km/s

There is no problem here, because the only thing relativity states, is that it's impossible for matter to move THROUGH space at light speed. This does not contradict the Inflationary theory because IT states that the universe expansion is not matter moving through space. It couldn't be, because the universe is not expanding into space. Space didn't exist before the universe came into being. Since space is part of the universe, it's not expanding into space. It's space IT'S SELF expanding. So it's free to move as fast as it wants without violating relativity.
whats it expanding into ?

that is a very good read .

This is what is happening.
It is like throwing a ball from a bike, if the bike is still it will go a certain speed. If you throw the ball when the bike is moving the ball goes the speed you throw the ball plus the speed of the bike.
But this big bang first started faster than than the speed of light , then slowed down . I would guess that it cannot speed up again , so if the universe is expanding the speed of light + the speed of the big bang , then it would be slowing down , not speeding up
