So far we have:

RAB vs Dan

1. c4   Nc6 .

Dan vs RAB

1. e4 c5   2. Nc3

Yes, I have ordered those kits (Elephant & Hawk) from the House of Staunton. I have 2 of them actually. I also ordered an Omega Chess Set online because it has a 10 x 10 board. My buddy Diego & I used that board + the Hawk & Elephant to play a few games of Grand Chess, which I really enjoyed.

Diego & I also managed to work in 3 games of S-chess ....... which we both found "explosive" ...... things could seem quiet and then suddenly blow up.

Somewhere I read in a blog or Forum where somebody thought there was too much new power in s-chess, given it's (still small) size of board at 8x8, relative to say Grand or Capablanca chess which has 100 squares / 80 squares respectively. Frankly, I thought that made it sound pretty appealing ..... have you ever played Grand Chess at mindsport.net??

Finally, the idea of pieces entering the game at your discretion seems fascinating. Ever heard of Mastadon Chess? The entire army is dropped onto the board by the players, one piece at a time. Then the game begins.

We just moved here to Omaha  ..... literally. We are still unpacking boxes.

As of today, I can only find 1 set and 1 Seirawan set of Hs and Es.

I had an idea:     Initially, why don't we play 1 game at a time??

With my new job and work around the house, I think you will find my response time better too with just 1 game.  After I/we get unpacked and better arranged, we could try the 2 color game setup.

I will let you pick the game to proceed in:

RAB vs DAN??    or    DAN vs RAB??

Regards,

Dan

Rob,

I appreciate you giving me extra time. However I CAN handle a move every few days -- assuming I am playing just 1 game at a time.

PS       I posted a note under "Chess960" that read "Ever play Bear Chess?" ............ Ichabod801 &  We had a good discussion about Chess Variants on differing sized boards and what to do to "speed up a game" ...........

No sweat.

I certainly know who Bobby Fischer was but didn't realize there was a Chess 960 Memorial for him. (did he die in November of 2007?)

I remember the summer of 1972 like it was yesterday. Bobby & Boris were the lead on the news for about 2 months ..... how great was that?? I have been into chess (on & off) since 1968, but before 1972 it was not headline news. It was cool to see chess get treated so seriously -- the only thing close was the Kasparov - Deep Blue matches which I also followed closely.

So how did you do in the 960 Memorial?? (I have never played Fischer Random but would like to .....)

Settled in? Getting closer I guess .... still a boatload of boxes. The piles are getting shorter (LOL).

When you say 2 advance to the next round, do you mean that only 2 of the 48 players move on? So, is this to establish some kind of World Champ of Chess960?

I am sure I would like Chess960 but I think I will like s-chess even more. I really, really like the idea of brand new chess pieces and the fact that there are so many more potential

-middle game attacking ideas

-end game matchups (K & E & N & 5 pawns versus K & H & 2Bs & 3 pawns) .... there have to be a ton of these ...

I also like the idea of more different types of pieces within the same game .... for eg, one version of S-chess I would like to try someday is this:

The Queen-side N becomes a Bear (it can jump to all 16 squares on the 2nd perimeter) and the Queen-side Rook becomes a Royal Rook. (A Royal Rook can still be used in castling but can also move 1 square diagonally). The only duplicate pieces are then the Bishops.

Finally there are 3 pieces that can be dropped onto the board and they are:

Elephant, Hawk & Mastadon (A Mastadon can jump 1 OR 2 squares in any direction, horizontal, vertical or diagonal.

You would use a die to start the game and establish which 2 of the 3 pieces are dropped on the board for this particular game. There are 3 possible pairs (E & H, E & Ma, H & Ma) corresponding to the 3 die outcomes:    1 - 2, 3 - 4, 5-6.

Both the Bear & Mastadon are likely worth around 5.5 - 6 points on an 8 x 8 board. Both make good adversaries for the Rook -- though both are totally different in their strengths and weaknesses relative to a R.

I guesstimate that a Royal Rook would give a Hawk a good "run for it's money" -- though again, the 2 have very different strengths. (I love all these potential matchups.)

Regular Chess has 6 different types of "men". The S-chess I propose has 11, 5 brand new potential weapons to learn to use and perfect.

I hope you continue to do well in Chess960!!

"How about Seirawan Chess 960? Or Seirawan Chess where the additional queens most sets come with these days can be introduced along with the hawk and the pachiderm?"

Sounds like it could have potential ..............

"Panzerschiff would like to play you. Here's quote from our last corresspondence:  I see we picked up a new player.  I don't seem to have a message from him that he sent earlier, but if Dan would like to play me as well just make a move and I will reply to it on a thread or email if Dan would prefer that.  My address is jvehre@  ."

I would be very interested in playing Panzerschiff ..... right after our game ends.  Can you let Jvehre know that?  Thanx

PS         is he the person who won a tournament in Grand Chess ..... maybe even Grand Chess World Championship from 2004 (2005?)

Sorry for the delay ....... my asma has flared a bit with the extremely cold weather.

I should have a move soon (tonite or tomorrow).

My son Tim (aged 17) wants to play Panzerschiff. Can Panzerschiff set up the blog and then I can direct Tim to it??

Am I to assume this means     jvehre@chess.com ??

A friend of mine at work overheard me raving about s-chess.

He asked a question that had not occurred to me .......... if a Hawk is dropped onto b1 in place of the N that moves to c3, can an Elephant then be dropped onto b1 when the Hawk moves?? Or does the E have to be dropped onto a square vacated by one of the regular chess pieces??
