The Benko Gambit can be fun.

As White I think I would have prefered 16.Bxd6 rather than Re2, but what do I know.  Pinedaec is only about 1000 points higher than I am.

Nice victory awaldock.  When you are 2725 you can play whatever you want.  The Benko Gambits can turn out to be 50 moves plus.  Not if you get checkmated though.  Better to keep the queens on when you are playing Black in the Benko.

In 1975 I used to play the Benko Gambit in local tournaments in Chicago.  At that time the Benko was relatively new on the chess scene in America.  What I remember from those tournaments is that when the players of the White pieces tried to avoid the Benko by declining the gambit, I had less trouble winning.  I never experienced much trouble when opponents declinded the gambit.  So in this game (from my perspective) accepting the gambit pawn is the right choice for White.

I must say that I have never played the Benko as black, but do like being a pawn up. Very good game Adrian, maybe the two of us should have another go at the Benko sometime ;)
