Team Chess Anyone?

    Hello all,

I've been pretty busy with real life the last few months and feel like I've kind of neglected our little community here.  Sorry about that.  I've also gotten myself into too many games at once so that I'm lucky to just make my moves before getting put on 'vacation' mode...

I've noticed that chess.com now has implemented team chess.  Has anyone tried it yet?  Is anyone perhaps interested in being part of a GrayMatter Chess team to compete against another team? Here is a link with information about team chess: http://www.chess.com/groups/help.html

I play as part of a real-time on-line team chess leauge at the International Chess Club and it is a lot fun.  But since it is real-time the logistics of scheduling (especially since you can play people from all time zones around the world) can get a bit challenging.  It might be worth a try to put together a GrayMatter team (of 4 or 6 people, for example) and see how it works with the turn-based approach here at chess.com.

Are you perhaps interested in giving it a try?  If so, respond to this forum topic and let's talk about it.

If someone might be interested in organizing it for our group then let me know that also.  I believe the organizer needs to be a group administrator, but we can have multiple group administrators and for a small price (LOL) I could extend that honor to someone in addition to me...

I'd be up for team chess but I wouldn't make a good administrator.

    Mphiliber --

Quick question: would you (or anyone else?) be interested in organizing it - i.e. figuring out how it works and getting a team together a from our group do give it a try?

I'd be interested in playing, but I'm covered over with too much in my non-chess 'real' life to invest much creative time in making the team happen.

    No pressure, just a question!

Please explain how it works.  Does the team decide on the move or does each team member make his or her own move?

    Thanks

I am interested in this team chess matches. Thought I would post this and  get the conversation going again. I would be willing to manage our team as long as it isn't too complicated. It looks to me like you match your players against other groups to win points. You would be playing against another player from another group. Not like vote chess where we all play. As long as the matches are fair (rating wise) I think it would be fun. So let's get this post going again. Would like to hear from group members who would like to participate. Let me know. I think I would enjoy arranging the matches and it would be fun to cheer each other on as our group battles other groups.

Good initiative, tas58!  If you're interested in organizing this and if others are interested in trying it, let's do it.  I've not played team chess here and it is all a bit fuzzy to me.  Vote chess was fuzzy also until I tried it.  "Learn by doing" I guess!  If in order to organize it you need 'administrator' status for this group let me know and I can 'promote' you (!!).  There can be multiple administrators.  Right now I guess I'm what chess.com calls a 'super-administrator' since I'm the group organizer.  But you'd be a great administrator!

From the little that I remember about what I read with team chess it does seem like the matching is the key and that you'd have to be careful (not sure how that would be done) to see that players of somewhat similar rating play each other rather than having lower-rated players totally dominated - that would ultimately be pretty discouraging for them I suspect.  But that's precisely the kind of thing someone (YOU!) would need to research and figure out, etc.

I'd say go for it!  Let me know what I can do to facilitate things.

Graybeard - Not much time as I'm off to work in a minute. I would like to do this. You are right in that the matching is the key. I would look at the ratings of players but more importantly I would look at their highest rating achieved and the average rating of opponents. Things like that. And I would have our players set a limit to the number of matches (games) they would like to have. That way our players would not have alot of games added to them. Really would like to hear from others here at our group and get their feedback. -- tas58
