Then, and now...

Back in the 80's I discovered the Budapest defense.

At that time, I joined a chess Club (Johannesburg Chess Club) for the first time.

Members included a 8 or 9 year old wide-eyed Watu Kobese, the iconic Lennie Aron and some strong players, including John Deere-Jones.

The first club match I was involved in was a (25/25) I think, and I had to Play Black agains Deere-Jones. Here was my chance to stun a top player with my favourite defense! At that time I favoured a rather dubious line, but he played right into it, and I won his Queen for 2 pieces. However he played on, I maqde some mistakes, he offered a draw, I accepted, and he promptly showed me I still had a win.

Over the years I've seen a few of John's game published in newspapers locally, and to my surprise he actually adopted the Budapest himself later on. I've always wondered if that game prompted him to have a closer look.

Now, in a match for Team SA, I decided to dust off that

old line again, which I haven't played in decades. Here's what happened:

This is indeed a pretty one - we should probably have a "tricks" forum in this team! Thanks for sharing!
