There's been some discussion on this topic in the Group Notes, so I started thinking about a top 10 list: best drummers of rock.
I'll preface this by saying I am not a drummer (or a musician of any kind, although I have tried). All I can go by is what sounds good to my ear.
Here's the list I've got so far, but I need help getting it to ten. Note that this is decidedly not ranked, to avoid the inevitable "Peart vs. Bozzio vs. Palmer" discussions ...
Without further ado:
Neil Peart
Carl Palmer
Terry Bozzio
Ginger Baker
John Bonham
Keith Moon
Bill Bruford (?)
Dave Grohl (I may be showing my age here, but I think he ranks)
Then I started thinking of 10 worst drummers, and got as far as Meg White before I got depressed. It might be best not to go there ...
Who am I missing?

here is one I think you need to have in there for sure
Chad Wackerman (born March 25, 1960 in Long Beach, California) is a jazz, jazz fusion and rock drummer; arguably best known in the United States for his work as a drummer and percussionist in Frank Zappa's band. However, he has worked as a band member, session musician, sideman, and bandleader of his own jazz trio.
Chad Wackerman was raised in Seal Beach, California, in a family immersed in music. His father, a drummer, is an award-winning music teacher who has taught at both high school and middle school levels with a specialization in jazz. Chad and his brothers, John, and Brooks Wackerman are all proficient drummers and multi-instrumentalists. John recorded an album titled Drum Duets Vol.1 Brooks is a member of the band Bad Religion, and his brother Bob is a bassist and producer.[1]
Wackerman joined the Bill Watrous band in 1978 and later went on to work with Frank Zappa for seven years; from 1981 to 1988. This was not an easy feat; Zappa required discipline, and the auditions for his band were notoriously grueling, according to Steve Vai and Wackerman himself.[1] Two songs, "Mo and Herb's vacation", and "The Black Page" were considered drummer's nightmares. Only three drummers throughout Zappa's career were able to play them successfully; Wackerman, Terry Bozzio, and Vinnie Colaiuta.
In 1983, he toured, but did not record, with Australian rock act Men at Work. Wackerman played on the One Voice album and video with Barbra Streisand. He has also recorded albums and toured with artists such as Allan Holdsworth, Steve Vai, Andy Summers, Ed Mann, Albert Lee, Colin Hay, Dweezil Zappa and Tom Grant. Chad was also the drummer for the house band on the first Dennis Miller late night talk show.
Chad has also toured with James Taylor, John Patitucci and Joe Sample, as well as fellow Zappa drummer Terry Bozzio in a series of all-percussion concerts. Chad lived in Australia for ten years between 1995 and 2005. Due to changes in the music scene in Australia and an increase in gigs in the United States, Chad decided to move back to California in July, 2005.
The current Chad Wackerman Trio includes: Chad Wackerman (drums) Doug Lunn(bass) Mike Miller(guitar)
Chad's own records include guitar contributions from Allan Holdsworth.
Solo Artist
My Favorite former FZ drummer after Bozzio and may be my favorite overall after Bozzio is Vinnie..... as you can tell, I am not the only one who feels strongly about his talent.... an amazing # of performances with others
Vincent Colaiuta (born February 5, 1956) is an American drummer based in Los Angeles. Originally from Republic, Pennsylvania, he began playing drums as a child and received his first full drum kit from his parents at the age of 14. He is notable for his technical skill and his musical versatility, having played with many artists from a wide variety of genres. Colaiuta was ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as the fourteenth greatest drummer of all time[1].
After attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston for a year, Colaiuta had his first big break as a member of the Christopher Morris Band in 1976-1977. Playing and recording with the Christopher Morris Band (MCA 2282) in 1977, Vince relocated with the band to Los Angeles. After leaving the Christopher Morris Band, Vince made a mediocre living playing with lounge bands. His next break came in April 1978 at the age of 22, when he auditioned for Frank Zappa, an audition that involved performing the notoriously difficult piece entitled "The Black Page". The audition was successful and Colaiuta went on to work with Zappa as his principal drummer for studio and live performances. Colaiuta played on the successful Zappa albums Tinsel Town Rebellion, Joe's Garage, and Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar. Joe's Garage was named one of the top-25 drumming performances of all time in a 1993 Modern Drummer Magazine article.
About Colaiuta's ability to play Zappa's notoriously complex music and the complex style of polyrhythms, guitarist Steve Vai told the following story:
After leaving Zappa, Colaiuta went on to work with a long list of notable rock and pop artists, including Gino Vannelli, Joni Mitchell, Barbra Streisand, Sandy & Junior, Clannad, Wang Chung, Chaka Khan, Megadeth, The Beach Boys, Leonard Cohen and Jeff Beck. He has also appeared with many notable jazz musicians, including Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Haslip, Quincy Jones, the Buddy Rich Big Band and Buell Neidlinger. He has also played with Chuck Loeb, David Goldblatt, David Sancious, Dean Brown, Jeff Porcaro, Jim Beard, John Patitucci, Mark Egan, Robben Ford, and Tim Landers.
In 1990, Colaiuta successfully auditioned as drummer in Sting's touring band in support of his album The Soul Cages. Colaiuta remained as a member of Sting's band for the next seven years. He declined the offer to go out on the road for the Brand New Day tour in 1999 due to the unusually grueling amount of time that Sting prefers to cover the globe. Colaiuta's studio work with Sting can be heard on Ten Summoner's Tales (1993), Mercury Falling (1996), three songs on Brand New Day (1999) and two songs on Sacred Love (2003). In September 2003, Vinnie returned to Sting's touring lineup in a brief promotional tour of Sacred Love, but once again declined the offer to participate in the world tour.
Colaiuta released a self-titled solo recording in 1994, and still remains one of the most in demand studio musicians playing on countless albums,[2]film soundtracks, TV and radio jingles. His dedication to self-improvement is legendary: Dom Famularo, a famous drum educator and Colaiuta's friend, once told a story about Colaiuta opening his door while practising on a drum pad; after a few minutes of a chat on the door step, Colaiuta said: "I'm such a bad host, I haven't offered you anything! Do you want a pad?"
Colaiuta has won a total of 18 Drummer of the Year awards from Modern Drummer Magazine's annual reader polls. These include 10 awards in the "Best Overall" category. Colaiuta was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1996. The publication also cited Colaiuta as being the most important drummer of our time.
In 2006 to 2007, Colaiuta toured with Jeff Beck and Tal Wilkenfeld on bass, with Jason Rebello playing keyboards, in Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival.
More recently, Colaiuta recorded and toured with Faith Hill, recorded with the thrash metal outfit Megadeth on their album The System Has Failed, and has most recently toured with Jeff Beck and Herbie Hancock.
From October 22 to November 23, 2008, Colaiuta toured Europe with John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Kenny Garrett and Christian McBride in the Five Peace Band.
2009 was the release of the Zappa alumni all star band The Mar Vista Philharmonic, featuring Tommy Mars, Bruce Fowler, Walt Fowler, Arthur Barrow, among others, on Jon Larsens Zonic Entertainment label.
In 1990, Colaiuta teamed up with the Avedis Zildjian Cymbal company to create the A Custom line of cymbals,[3][4] based on the A Zildjian cymbals. Colaiuta endorses Gretsch Drums and has his own signature kit. He often uses USA Custom drums in Europe and his signature drums in the US and the far east, but recently used the New Classic line of drums when touring with Herbie Hancock and the Renown Maple series live with Jeff Beck. Colaiuta used a Renown Maple series drum-set in the Five Peace Band tour, but he was seen using his signature drums in Cork, Ireland.
Vinnie Colaiuta? Where is he now?
I thought about Aynsley Dunbar too. Chad Wackerman is a new name to me.
Well, he has played on 3 releases thus far in 2010. Not too shabby.... Mark Egan's, Jeff Beck's, and the last I believe is Herbie Hancock's. His versatility makes him in huge demand for studio work, not sure whether he is touring as well though.....

I would add Gavin Harrison who currently plays for Porcupine Tree.

In my opinion, if you can hit the drums like she does in the one video and then calmly and in a smooth tone sing right after, that's worth something.
