Dell is great, better than HP. Alienware and ibuypower have great gaming computers. eMachines and Compaq have good, cheap computers. Sony and Toshiba are good, too, but expensive.

While I am certainly not capable of building my own computer, I agree that self-built ones far exceed store or Internet bought ones.  I will probably have a computer guru friend of mine custom build my next computer.  My last several computers have been Dell's simple because I like to pick and choose the components I want.  However, from what I am reading, Dell computers are no longer meeting the mark.  Heretofore, I would have opted for HP over Dell, but with my recent experience with HP's customer service department over a faulty printer, I will never purchase another HP product nor will I recommend one.
