Silman Fans & Fanatics

  • International
  • Formed: Jan 10, 2012
  • This group is for players who are inspired by the writings of Jeremy Silman and who strive to incorporate his ideas into their games, particularly his chess strategies based on recognizing the imbalances present in any position. We have study groups and open threads to which we contribute whenever anything of interest comes along: "Silman Chess Mentor Courses, Silman Articles on chess.com, Book Reviews, etc.".____ Silman: "I'm often asked why I got into professional chess. I always answer in the same way: "For the money and the women!" Why would I say that? Because, there is no money and there are no women. In other words, it's another metaphor for, "I play because the game is everything to me. I know there's no fortune to be had, or cheerleaders screaming in bliss as I push my Rooks down the board. I play because I have to play ... I play because it's in my blood and has become a part of me ... I play because chess makes me happy."

  • Thanks KT. Good luck today. Let me know how it goes. That is a pretty steady pace but a reasonable goal. I think I can handle it. I am reviewing Amateur again in preparation do starting in a few weeks would be perfect. I will Friend you and we can talk as we get closer.

  • I'm playing in the US Open starting today though so I wouldn't be starting for a few weeks.

  • @KingOswald, I was planing on reading a chapter every two weeks. That means on average about 20-30 pages a week. I would like to finish the book by the end of the year. Does that sound doable for you? Anyone else interested in a HTRYC study group?

  • KT I am in. I won't be able to storm through it. Bite size chunks would better. How do you propose we go about it?

  • Hi! I would like to do vote chess and discuss Silmans articles posted in chess.com(and maybe chat about his books too - never done it so far, so dont know what to expect:):)! ps our groups tourney would be fun too, so we could see how each others play and maybe dicuss while playing:) GL!

  • If we can get several people committed to it, I am happy with organizing it. I've done book discussions before (on computer topics) and usually at least half the people drop out pretty quickly. :-) But, I am reading it anyway so if there are a few ambition people that want to do it as a group, I think we could all learn more!

  • Thanks for the dk. Will check it out. I am hoping there is renewed interest. I joined hoping that Silman lovers would be actively discussing his books and teachings.
