The Philidor Defense

  • Some refers it as "solid". Some even refers it as "passive". But have you ever heard it being called "aggressive", "tactical" or maybe even "insane"!? The original idea behind the Philidor was actually a very aggressive one, to secure the center and prepare the amazing advance f5!? Or have you ever heard of the sharp "philidor dragon"? Black can also create a lot of different solid formations where he's slowly making progress behind a solid wall of pawns. White players will often grow impatient and desperately run towards blacks king, but the only thing they are truly running towards is their own destruction. The philidor is full of interesting ideas which most players haven't even heard of. In fact most players doesn't even bother looking at the philidor at all!   • I have gotten to play some really nice games against the a5, exd4, Nc5 plan, unfortunately none of my opponents played the variations very accurately

  • yeah I think Bauer recommends the ..b6 lines and Barsky .. a5..but I don't have the Barsky book..I just follow Bologan and general ideas with a Boleslavsky pawn wall...as I am also a King's Indian player

  • I haven't tried that line. I'm following Christian Bauer's reccomendations on his book. But I would like to give that a try

  • I think you play into the Hanham as White? as Black I do the ..a5, ..exd4 then ..Nc5 plan, wondering if you've had any good games in those lines?

  • Unfortunately I haven't been especially active in this group for a long time. I have however played some interesting philidor games these past few months, mainly from white's perspective though!

  • playing a tourney this weekend, will attempt to play a Philidor in all my games..even as White! yes I'm that silly. Hopefully I'll have some interesting games to share.
