Hi. My name is Michael, and I am 18 years old.
Chess has been a lifelong thing for me. At first, I was learning from my parents how to push a pawn up, use the power of mass destruction weapons that we still need today! Of course they are the rook, knight, bishop and queen. Also I was taught how to look after something that means everything to you. Your soul. Your hero. The Footballing Legend to the young fan. The emerald diamond to the family. The King.
The year 2001. I turned 8. Just had my birthday, and received LEGO Chess as a kid. Just for fun. Wanted to beat the computer... but it was never easy. After a while, I thought to try something less challenging than chess, only play chess when I had nothing better to do.
2003. A new football team for me. I try for it, succeed, but it collapses really early, that was a year later. Gotta find a new team. Found one and did training, but the new bright spark replaces me. It's 2005 and I find the perfect team. I play and play and love it 'til our team collapsed in 2009. Some memories playing just stick with me. What a lovely game. Still play football today, for a good old kickaround!
2009, my last days aged 15. I have played tennis before, but with little/no interest. Accidentally entered into a tournament above my level... but I still won a match! Now I feel I can stick. Play more tournaments, have thrills and spills, but keeping a deep passion on the wonderful game. Forever. Til' eternity.
Summer 2010, aged 17. I remember checking Kasparov vs Deep Blue, a really interesting dog fight. I notice 'Sicilian Defence' and think 'wow is chess that fundamental???'. Some lucky night, I dream of Kasparov teaching me the Sicilian defence, telling me its value, and lecturing me on chess. Why that dream? Why not a tennis related dream? Well, we all know it's a good thing...
About 3 fortnights later, I join a chess club. And? OMG A GRANDMASTERS DOING A SIMULTANEOUS DISPLAY!!!!!! I CAN'T BEAT MOST PEOPLE AT CHESS, GIMME A BREAK! We play. I have a losing position right from the start as white, and shouldve resigned at move 30. But I want to stay for a long time, he mates me on move 70. I thought WICKED!!! And then I played more at my chess club, improving, played a tournament (no wins) and then I focus and study more. Last time playing that tournament at Golders Green, I got 3/6! Improvement! Time to rise and help the family.
Now I play competitive tennis and chess, and enjoy both of them! Persistence pays off, try and try 'til the end. Good luck to everyone. Thanks a lot for taking your time to read about me. Peace x10
