About Me:
Irish by birth, I've lived in England for 20 years. I love my family, my church, tennis, cricket, baseball, history, literature, philosophy, the performing arts, quality in all things, good manners, Ingrid Bergman, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren, George Best, Muhammad Ali, John Henry Newman and Ben Johnson. I loathe gridiron football, synchronised swimming, reality TV, chatrooms, clothes with labels on the outside, trainers, wooly thought and speech, environmental pessimists, inarticulate TV presenters, politicians with no experience of the world, Carl Lewis, George W Bush, Josemaria Escriva, Osama Bin-laden, The Prince of Wales and current consort. I want to be on my city council by this time next year, so watch this space. Chess is a safety valve rather than an obsession. The only book worth squat on the subject I've read is Lasker, and that only because I was in hospital for a week when I was 12. I play every day on the ChessWorld site (current rating 2556) but have just joined this site. The players who have inspired me have been Morphy, Lasker, Capablanca, Tal, Fischer and Kasparov, and of these the greatest is Morphy. I respect Alekhine and Botvinnik. I play quickly, and regard the time limit merely as a safety cushion to cover weekends away etc. I claim wins on time, particularly in tournaments, where it would be unfair to others if I didn't. My favourite openings are Queen's Pawn and English; my favourite defence is any variety on the Sicilian.
