Thanks James ! You wrote first “Ends”, …. Unless sometimes they never come. We win or lose before. And you underline the apertures, when all beguin, at the end. Hi Bob, Tactics, endgames, openings: in that order. I find that the tactics trainer here is quite useful. I think that time spent on endgames--first basic checkmates until you can do them in your sleep, then pawn endgames, then fundamental rook endgames--Lucena and Philidor positions.by Ziryab 7 months ago

In our last game, look at some tactics: 13...Be6 loses a piece, although I failed to exploit the opportunity. 16...Nxd5 would have allowed me to post a knight at f5, but you would have been ahead a pawn (two, but the extra a-pawn could not be protected). You could then play the prophylactic Kh8, and use the g-file for some counterplay.by Ziryab 9 months ago
