About Me:

I grew up on the East Coast and now live on the West one. I used to teach English (Lit. and Composition) in Nova Scotia, Vancouver, and for one year, in Germany, but I gave it all up to work in software.

When I'm not playing chess or working, I like reading, surfing the web, all kinds of music, hiking (mostly urban) and playing with my four-year-old son. I'm addicted to caffeine. I refuse to acknowledge the existence of the last three Star Wars movies. I'm a Virgo and a Monkey. I'm a vegetarian & a slow-cooker enthusiast. I love John Cusack movies, sushi, and orange-vanilla floats.

I've had an on-again, off-again love affair with chess for years now, and I think I've pretty much peaked skill-wise unless I find more time to study seriously. My dad taught me how the pieces move ages ago, but that was about the extent of it. A few books (especially those by Jeremy Silman, starting with the series he co-authored with Yasser Seirawan) turned things around for me and really got me going.

Hmm... what else.. I prefer Bishops to Knights, tend towards 1. e4, never play the Sicilian, and am capable of making some really spectacular blunders now and then. I tend to practice a couple of openings for long periods, and I'm not above consulting an openings reference in online play. (I'm here to learn!) Cheers!
