Brian Karen - has over twenty years experience competing in chess tournaments
of all levels and is ranked as an expert by the USCF and FIDE. He has
been popularizing chess for over a decade by teaching the game to thousands
of children at schools and libraries across Long Island, NY. The summer camp Usdan,
whose successful chess program Brian has directed for the last eleven years,
has recently created the first building ever designed exclusively for
educational chess. Brian was one of the driving forces behind the creation of
the Internet’s largest chess club (www.chessclub.com) and was hired by IBM
to give web commentary during the famous Deeper Blue – Kasparov match.
In 2007, Brian was elected by a cross section of Chess Coaches around the
country to the United States Chess Federation’s (USCF) Scholastic Council.
This five person body is responsible for regulating the National Scholastic
Chess Championships and advising the USCF on all scholastic matters.
Brian has been awarded the title of Chess Expert by the Federation
Internationale Des Echecs and the United States Chess Federation.
Brian holds a Graduate degree in Social Work from Fordham University.
