I am able to consistently defeat drunks who brag about what great chess players they are, but any serious player inevitably beats me and then patronizingly tells me how well I played.
If I were to study the openings so as not to get myself into a weakened position, unnecessarily, I would probably do a lot better. My wife just bought me a nice, classical, wooden set for my 62nd birthday, and I want to start learning to play better.
