About Me:
At this writing, I am going into a kind of chess retirement (see below).--My avatar depicts Harun al-Rashid ("the Rightly Guided"), caliph in Baghdad 786-809 CE, in a detail from a painting showing him receiving the embassy of Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Emperor, in 802. At that time, Harun was acknowledged as the most powerful ruler in the world. His vizier, Yahya al-Barmak, established Harun's court as the most glorious in the world. In 805 Harun had Yahya thrown into prison, no doubt for neglecting to introduce chess at court. I imagine Harun, at the time he sat for this painting, was thinking: "I'd rather be playing chess."

My Chess Style / Favorite Openings:
I was mainly active in chess during high school, in the early 70s. In Chess.com, I have found an avenue for renewing my interest in chess, and it's been great. But I am finding that the time sink I dealt with humorously in my Forum thread ("Top Ten Bad Things...") is all too real for me. My working is ratcheting up, and there are other things I'm not getting to; and so I have decided to step back for a while. I want to say thank you to all the friends I have made on here for your friendship, and all my opponents for your opponentship. I'll be checking in no doubt from time to time; keep in touch!
