I learned to play at age 6, started playing in tournaments at 13, retired at 16, and started playing again at 49. Unlike wine, one's chess game doesn't get better sitting in a dark cellar for 33 years... I'm still pushing wood (while pushing 60), since I'm too busy to seriously play or study.
