My dad taught me the basics of chess when I was about six years old. I treated it only as a casual hobby until my freshman year of high school. At this point, I started taking it very seriously, playing online about every other day. In my sophomore year I found several other players in my school, which made it easier to practice what I learned and allowed me to experience more OTB play. At the end of that year, I won the school's chess tournament (by a hair over a very good friend of mine, who is probably a better player than I am). I play chess for fun and for an intellectual challenge. I would love to someday be a master, but I'm taking baby steps, at least for now.
