Saramago (an atheist) is addressing just what you were questioning, only that Saramago has concern with "Christ's redeeming sacrifice [that] covers all sin." Saramago does not believe in the innate goodness of god- and thats what his novel is about. As you picked up its a fictional account of Jesus (as the book overtly acknowledges).
