For me playing a game of chess is like entering a labyrinth into which my opponent has entered from the other side. There are a number of paths to choose from, and they seldom seem to lead in a straight line. Each path has its own life, moves with its own twists and turns. Some paths lead to dead ends...some turn back upon themselves...but most of them lead me to the unexpected. Sometimes I wonder whether I’ve chosen a path or whether the path has chosen me. Sometimes it feels as if I’ve been swallowed.
As we move deeper into the labyrinth, it’s easy to lose your way...to get lost...to forget where you came in. What light there is can be deceptive; it plays tricks with one's eyes; in some places it’s too dark to see further than a few steps ahead. Yet you are somewhere in the same labyrinth with me.
As we move toward each other, or as we are moved by the labyrinth toward each other, we are moved by the dynamic of dominance and submission. I wonder if you feel the fear that I feel; I wonder if you feel the same desire. I know at some point we are going to meet, but when we find each other, will we meet as lovers or as rivals...and is there really a difference? For me chess is not about the intellect or even a question of whose will is stronger. For me chess is about the constancy of passion.
