Occupation: Anthropology Student and Gamergirl
[I don't play what chess.com calls "Online Chess". I do play Live Chess. I'm often around on weekdays between 4 and 6 pm Pacific Time for games. My gamergirl Twitter account: https://twitter.com/BackyardPawn] I'm a grad student and more of a chess groupie than a chess player. I'm interested in chess history, especially the lives of the great players, and I am fascinated by the representation of chess in art, literature, photography and other media. In general, I'm intrigued by the role of games and gaming in world cultures, past and present. I suppose you could say that I'm interested in chess from an anthropological perspective. Nevertheless, I still love to play and study the game. I have a chessboard permanently set up on my desk so I can turn to it during any spare moment. As you can probably discern from my blog, I'm a fanatical player of chess variants, and I'm also a huge fan of Asian chess, including shogi, xiangqi, janggi, and makruk. I really only enjoy playing chess in beautiful venues (not tournament halls...yuk!) If you see some girl leaning over a checkered board on a high bluff above the Pacific or in a meadow in Yosemite, it's probably me. My favorite chess quote is by the Dutch Grandmaster Jan Timman: "Chess is a narrow way. I leave all pleasure behind. It is a time without pleasure, yes." This statement sums up the game for me. Playing chess is torture...only rarely during the course of a game do I experience its sheer beauty. Nevertheless, I am extremely addicted to the pain it produces in my head. The photo around the border of this page is my chess nook. I love it there.
