Third generation Californian, Vietnam vet, proud Golden Bear. Learned chess at 13 -- because of a girl! Two months later we moved away and I never saw her again, but chess became my lifetime mistress. Broke 2200 seven times; nowadays have trouble keeping off my 2000 floor. Played in 31 US Opens. National Tournament Director and International Arbiter, worked in US CF office for three years, served six years on US Chess Executive Board, currently member of Ethics, Bylaws, and Awards committees.  Received Distinguished Service Award. Occasional writer for US Chess and winner of two humor awards from Chess Journalists of America. Clubs are our backbone (for over the board chess, anyway!), and I've been champion of five in Southern California over the years.
