chess is one of those great equalizers, age, race, gender, experience... really don't matter. Any given game you can be up, then down... think you've got 'em, or are done for, and then... one move later, the tables are turned and it's a whole different game. I've been playing since elementary school, never considered myself that good, but always enjoy playing... actually trying for the first time to learn the game.
