13 Year-Old Ray Robson Wins Miami Open

Submitted by SonofPearl on Tue, 09/16/2008 at 12:36pm.

Photo from official siteThe 2008 Miami Chess Open was held from 10-14 September and won by the 13 year-old American prodigy, Ray Robson (pictured), ahead of several Grandmasters.

Ray lives with his parents in Florida and would like to become a professional chess player one day.  Looks like he's already well on the way!

After 9 hard fought rounds, Ray was tied with GM Darmen Sadvakasov of Kazakhzan on 7 points and proceeded to win the Armageddon playoff.

Below is a video of Ray giving a simultaneous exhibition last year at the Clermont Chess Club, and one of Ray's wins from the event.  Look out for more of Ray in the future!

1...d5 is quite playable at any level Joel Lautier played against Anand and it turned out to be one of the best games of Anand ; and there are many others who play it ... just check out any databases ;

So why doubt over it and blame it on the opening?

how is Qb5 a checkmate?

i still do not see the line

I guess you mena after Rxd5. If so then Qb5 is checkmate because the g5 bishop guards d8 and e7 the e1 rook pins the e6 bishop and the queen check can't be blocked.

and another question why was Bb4 a !! move

if he didnt mvove his B he would still take the rook put the king in check

KxB

queen checks king

because after Qxc8+ it's not KxBe7 but BxQc8. Bb4+ Qxe1+ Bxe1 and it's knight bishop against Rook bishop black is winning. Bb4 put a pin on the bishop again not enabling Bxc8 and winning the game.

and why did the black king move back down pinning ( in a way) his rook again?

i dont see what allows those moves

I don't understand what you mean the king moves were all forced the bishop is pinned and can't move and the king can't move anywhere else then to e7 and e8 or d8 which is the same as e8.

Really nice game there I really liked both Rxd5 and Bb4 moves awesome.

I was there at the Miami Open. and i was stunned with the brilliant move Rxd5.

I knew that he was going to win with that move... but unfortenately he could not win the last round though.

why did black choose the center counter (1...d5)against e4?  Was that part of his repertoire or he was just overconfident that he can defeat the kid with it?  Just shows that black has no respect on white's skills.  I rarely see 1...d5 in top level chess because white often gets ahead in development and produces strong attack.
