http://www.pogonina.com/images/stories/orbita_logo_100.jpgThe 2012 Russian Team Chess Championships are underway in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

The competition format has changed from previous years - it's now a seven-round Swiss event running from 9-15 April.  There are 18 teams chasing the title and many elite players taking part, including Fabiano Caruana, Sergey Karjakin, Alexander Morozevich, Peter Svidler and many other 2700+ Elo rated players (see below).

The team ShSM-64 from Moscow are the ratings favourites with Caruana, Wang Hao, Leko and Giri among their team. After 2 rounds the Thomsk-400 team are the leaders.  Teams consist of 6 players and 2 reserves.

More information can be found at the official coverage here (in Russian). Preview by Vladislav Akselrod here.

A separate women's event is also taking place. The top players in the main event are:

Can't believe that last move blunder on morozevich's part :(

    (Popov,Iv RUS (2605) vs. Morozevich,A (2765))

But at least he's won the rest of his games since then :P

P.S. Round three also concluded and the tournament is now lead by Economist-SGSU, who have 6 match points
