7th Blitz "Death Match" Player Announcement!

  • IM DanielRensch
  • on 6/20/12, 11:07 AM.

Chess.com's 7th Blitz "Match of Death" will take place on Sunday, July 29th at 3pm Pacific (6pm Eastern) time. The match is set to feature the highest rated player in Filipino history, Grandmaster Wesley So, against the youngest Grandmaster in American history, Ray Robson.

Both So and Robson are ranked in the top 20 in the world on the current FIDE Top Juniors list, and both can boast many international and national chess accomplishments. Wesley So, the "favorite on paper" became a Grandmaster at the age of 14, was the winner of the Corus Wijk Aan Zee International chess tournament (C-Group) in January 2009, and is currently ranked just outside the top 100 in the world.

GM Ray Robson
GM Wesley So

Born in Guam, but a "Florida Native", Ray Robson became America's youngest Grandmaster Elect in history in October of 2009. Ray has been considered one of the brightest chess stars in America since the age of 12, has won numerous national scholastic titles and competed in multiple US Chess Championships.

This exciting matchup pits two of the world's brightest young stars against each other, but perhaps just as interesting is that it pits two "future teammates" -- as both will be attending Webster University in the fall, competing for the SPICE team in all collegiate and Pan-American events.

All the action will be covered live on Chess.com/TV, with live commentary by IMs Daniel Rensch and David Pruess and other special guests. The broadcast is open to all members of Chess.com! I was not able to watch the game because we had a get together with our friends. Somebody told me that they played 32 games. So won 23 games and Robson won 9 games. Is it correct?

wesley needs to take robson out of his set openings as he has better feel for positions. robson is overrated and i hope it shows.

45 mins to go! Looking forward to another great match - this website delivers the goods (if you're thinking about going to premium do it, well worth the little money they ask). I stil think you should look at letting members chip into a death match kitty so we can have more matches! I'd totally put in a few bucks if it allowed us to se one of these heavy hitter eath matches every month or so. Best wishes to both GM So and GM Robson, and as always a big THANK YOU to the best chess site on the internerd!

It's Sunday afternoon here in my place (New York City). Today is the game match of the 2 young GM in chess. One is the same name as me (Ray) from my place USA and one is from the Philippines where I came from before I came here in New York City.

I'm now a retired Filipino-American living in New York City. It's hard to choose between them because my race is still Filipino but I'm living in the USA for a long time now more than I used to live in the Philippines.

That is the reason why it's hard for me to choose. Besides, I like and love to dance the ballroom dancing a lot more than playing chess.

I hope the game will be a DRAW.

    Thank you,

    Ray

It is Sunday afternoon pass 4PM, July 29 here at this moment in New York City. The game will start in less than 2 hours at 6PM, New York time. It will be Monday morning, July 30, 2012 at 6AM, Manila time.

The time difference between New York and Manila is 12 hours. Manila is ahead of time in New York. The 3PM Pacific time is the time in the West Coast of the USA (California, Oregon, Nevada, Washington, etc). New York is in the East Coast of the USA. There are 3 hours difference between New York and California.

I hope I explained it to you very clearly and you can watch the game. It is too early morning there and people there are preparing to go to work. I think some people can not watch the game because of the time.

I might not be able to watch the game too even it is 6PM here in New York City because we are going out at this time.

Anyway, I hope it will be a DRAW game.

    Regards,

    Ray
