The 19th Bunratty Chess Festival took place from 17-19 February in Ireland and England's Michael Adams (pictured) won the Masters event.

Top seed Adams finished the 6-round Swiss competition with a score of 5 points, but needed to win a blitz playoff with rival Nigel Short to take the title.

Adams trailed both Short and defending champion Gawain Jones by half a point going into the final round but pulled out a win with the black pieces to catch them and force the playoff.

They should play this over the Easter weekend.

Why Lawdog, why should they do that?

Because they could have a visit from the Easter Bunratty!

The link to the official website is in the article (the name of the tournament, near the start). I usually make the link more obvious elsewhere, but forgot on this occasion Embarassed

@ keeganomahoney - thanks. I've corrected the time control.

Since the tournament finished I've been hoping that the moves of the playoff games would emerge, but I haven't seen them anywhere.  Thanks for the summary of what actually happened!

SonofPearl, the time control was actually 90 minutes and a 15 second increment. Also the blitz playoff was crazy, in the first game Adams mated Short as his flag fell(Short had no mating material) annd his flag was adjudicated to have fallen first, he won with reversed colours but if he'd lost I don't think he'd have been too happy!

@ RuralRob - Philip Short is Irish, so no relation to Nigel.
