Adams Wins Gibtelecom Masters

Submitted by SonofPearl on Fri, 02/05/2010 at 1:05pm.

Michael_Adams3.JPGEngland's Mickey Adams (pictured) won the Gibtelecom Masters after an exciting 4-way playoff.

Adams rode his luck after losing the first rapid game of his semi-final playoff with Germany's Jan Gustafsson, but he recovered to level the scores in the second game and then win the armageddon decider.

Paco Vallejo Pons won the other semi-final against Chanda Sandipan to make the final an England v Spain affair - rather appropriate for Gibraltar!

In the end it was a convincing victory for Adams, winning the first game and offering a draw in a winning position in the second.  His prize was a cheque for £15,000.

Natalia Zhukova won the £8,000 prize for the best placed woman.

All Adams' playoff games can be found below.

"Why would he sandbag? An invitation to Corus doesn't require you to accept."

Of course he doesn't have to accept, but declining such a prestigious invitation isn't everyone's cup of tea.

I was just joking anyway, as SOP speculated, the Corus (group A) players get paid more just for showing up than the money given for first.

The players at Corus also receive appearance fees, but these are not normally disclosed AFAIK.  I expect that the big name draws are compensated reasonably well just for taking part! Cool

Hypothetical:

Did Adams sandbag so that he won't be invited to Corus and he could play in a tournament against 2300+ players and win more money than Carlsen? :)
