Shirov takes the sole lead

At the 12-player round robin tournament in Foros, Ukraine, the second round saw Alexei Shirov take the lead by adding to his first round victory against Van Wely with another win.  This time his victim was Dmitry Jakovenko of Russia.

Round 2 also saw the popular Ukranian Vassily Ivanchuk bounce back from his first round loss to Magnus Carlsen by beating the Russian Evgeny Alekseev with the Catalan.  In fact, it turned out to be a clean sweep for the home players as Sergey Karjakin and Andrei Volokitin also completed second round victories.

Magnus Carlsen had a much quieter round with the Black pieces, agreeing to a cessation of hostilities against the experienced Peter Svidler after 22 moves of a Queen's Indian defence.

The results in round 2:

Shirov, Alexei - Jakovenko, Dmitry 1-0 46 E15 Queens Indian
