An Opportunity to Win FREE Platinum Membership and 1 Year Chess Mentor!!

Submitted by erik on Wed, 08/27/2008 at 9:14pm.

We have an annoying bug on Chess.com that I can't reproduce. If you can message me a way to recreate this bug reliably, I will give you a free platinum membership (worth $80) and 1 year of Chess Mentor (worth $100)!

Here is the bug:

When you come on to the main Chess.com site you get an ONLINE status indicator like this:

If you are on the main Chess.com site (meaning you have visited a page in the last 10 minutes) AND you are in Live Chess you get an icon like this:

If you are in Live Chess ONLY (meaning you are in Live Chess but haven't been active on the main site in the last 10 minutes) you get an icon like this:

Here's the problem: sometimes when you leave Live Chess it still shows you as in Live Chess when you are not! It makes the numbers off here: http://www.chess.com/livechess by a significant margin and it grows every day, so we know this is a common problem. Somehow people are exiting Live Chess without the system recognizing that you are gone, leaving you in a permanent state.

If you can figure out how to leave Live Chess and then have it stay as , then you will earn the Platinum Membership and Chess Mentor 1 Year Subscription :) Some ideas are: clicking on the LOGOUT link, closing the browser directly, hard shutdown of browser, exiting in middle of game, maybe different browsers have different issues, etc. Who knows!

If you work as a team to figure this out (and I recommend you do since that will allow somebody to see if you are online still when you leave) then you can BOTH win it :)

Happy bug hunting!

Enjoy!

Kayton, That always happens because it's just not fast enough. It comes up in about 5-15 minutes. If it takes longer then try again.

Wait a minute!!! I've found another bug. The picture next to my username shows a picture of a pokemon(Charizard). I have changed it!!! the problem is the pokemon was my old picture. I changed it to a picture of a pokemon trainer card but it only shows my old picture. The only place it shows my new picture is in my home tab.

Hi Eric,

Do that thing in like in chess mentor where when you close the popup window, it does something to the window that opened it. That way make a php file(or whatever you use) to change the users status.

I think that "body onunload"works for when the user closes the window.

I have an idea, erik, maybe you could use the the logout button and the close button as a link to the home page. When they leave, they will appear with a

indicator, so they will appear to be on the home page, where the actually are.

Maybe switch tabs to the LIVE chess page and close that so it knows for sure that you aren't online and THEN close out of live chess? Who knows?

Ok I don't really care about the free member thing, if I get it great, but I'm just a simple white hat hacker that sparked an idea. I don't know what kind of page that you play live chess on so I don't know if this will work, but if the antenna will change when you stop playing chess then make live chess on a page like normal chess; instead of being on that other page that opens when you start playing live chess

Please find the scenario below which works every time we test it this way. I tested it twice and both times we could get to see the problem occurring.

1. Login to chess.com using id1 (ramyapraveen) in IE. Let this id have spraveen2 added as friend. So that in friend's list we can see the icon for spraveen2

2. Login to chess.com using id2 (my id) (spraveen2) in FireFox

3. Go to LIVE chess in FireFox.

4. Logout of FireFox from the login page. (LIVE chess should remain logged in.)

5. Now, in IE of ramyapraveen, we will see spraveen2's id with LIVE and red light flashing.

6. Now, disconnect the internet connection.

7. In LIVE chess of FireFox we get the message, "Disconnected from server. Do you want to try to reconnect?". Click "Cancel" here.

8. The FireFox window is now closed.

9. Reconnect to the internet.

10. Refresh the login of ramyapraveen in IE.

11. Against the user name spraveen2, we will still see the red light flashing with the text LIVE.

Hope this explains the scenario.

This is similar to the one given by xbigboy, only that there the user closes the window, but here, we disconnect the internet connection.

Please let me know if you want the screen shots of the steps mentioned above.

Best regards,

Praveen S
