Anand v Topalov Match In Doubt

Submitted by SonofPearl on Sat, 10/03/2009 at 2:13am.

The resolutely opaque FIDE bidding process to host the planned Anand versus Topalov world championship match some time in 2010 has so far failed to attract a bid backed by real, honest, check our Swiss bank account if you don't believe us, MONEY.

In the current financial climate, and given the complete lack of a credible and stable WCC cycle, perhaps this isn't such a big surprise.  On the other hand, if chess can't attract sponsors for a much anticipated match between the world champion and the current #1 ranked player, what hope is there for the game?

The brief FIDE press release:

World Championship Match GM V.Anand - GM V. Topalov

When the deadline expired for bids for the World Championship Match between GM V Anand (current World Champion) and GM V Topalov, three bids had been received at the FIDE Secretariat in Athens, Greece from Bulgaria, Singapore and Turkey.

These bids were opened in the presence of the FIDE Deputy President, Georgios Makropoulos and the FIDE Executive Director, David Jarrett.

Under the terms of the bidding procedure, the bids should have been accompanied by financial guarantees. As none of the bids provided such a guarantee, it has been decided that the bidders have until October 15th, the day before the opening of the FIDE Executive Board at Halkidiki, Greece, to meet this condition.

Don't hold your breath.  It's a pity that no bid has been received from India, but Topalov would be unlikely to accept playing on the champion's home turf in any case, just as Anand would certainly be unhappy to play in Bulgaria.

If you happen to have at least 1million euros spare change and fancy hosting the match, please get in touch with FIDE.  The bidding procedure is here.  You know it makes sense.

It would be fun if they could do candidate matches using the US NCAA basketball system.  Then you could have brackets to fill out as you watched players progress.  Of course that might be too draining for challengers if the champion just sat and waited for the eventual winner.

Playing chess requires intelligence;  running FIDE requires money.  Since the current FIDE prez is filthy rich, he pretty much runs FIDE the way he wants to.  His gold, his rules.

The problem is, he runs FIDE like a high school student council run amok with no faculty oversight.  Thus whatever the mercurial whim of the moment happens to be, that's what happens.  It doesn't matter if there's a WCC cycle going on;  change the rules if it suits you.  Who cares what the players, the fans or potential sponsers might think.

Of course, the organization has less credibility than most high school student councils, which might have something to do with their inability to get anything beneficial done.  And it isn't going to change any time soon, because the current prez is the darling of the undeveloped world federations where the votes are.  Remember the last FIDE election where a busness guy who wanted to turn it into a busness got voted down?

The only way to fix it is to simply scrap the whole thing and start over.  Of course, that requires money and the ability to attract the top players away from the whole FIDE system.  And that's only going to happen if someone figures out how to turn chess into a sport where more than the top 10 players can earn a living from playing.

My advice is to simply ignore FIDE and enjoy the game for the game's sake.  Eventually there will be a match between Topalov and Anand.  It may not be as soon as we'd like or as lucrative as the last one, but if there's a reasonable amount of money (I wouldn't expect them to play for free..) the principals will show up with their game faces on and put on quite a show.  If you're the champ or a legitimate contender, it isn't just about the money...

Chess is not about money but about intelligence.

And if you have intelligence, then money would fall in. But... has Iluzhimzanov (however spelled) intelligence?

It doesn't seem so.

So... money doesn't fell.

It's not all that difficult to figure out a fair and permanent championship cycle. This would bring stability to the process, and sponsors could know what they will be getting far in advance of matches.

When austere measures are indicated, strategies must be revisited. I don't know how much money they get from a crowd of visitors at a championship venue, but an elegantly presented live web coverage of a championship cycle could deliver audiences larger by factors in the thousands and thus attract event sponsors who deeply believe in large targeted audiences. If FIDE can't manage that because they are just discovering eight-track tapes, then perhaps some clever chess site might seize the opportunity and set the standard for world championships in the digital age. If I'm not mistaken, the players will go where the grass is greener.

It would be nice if it was more like the old days.  Anand vs. Topalov and then candidate matches to determine the next challenger.  The candidates would be pretty easy to determine, the loser, Carlsen, Kramnik, and three others maybe the best Asian and American players to round out the field and draw a little more widespread interest.
