Melia_Salome cropped.jpgOne of the competitors at the Women's World Team Championships in Kazakhstan is Melia Salome (pictured), representing second seeds Georgia.

Melia played her first game of the tournament in the second round, where she defeated Natacha Benmesbah to help the Georgian team to a 3½-½ victory over France.

In an interview conducted after the game and published at the official championship website, Melia explained that she is playing under special circumstances - see the except below.

You’ve mentioned some special circumstances in your life which makes this tournament very special for you. Can you please share with us what happened?

I don’t want people to exaggerate and make a tragedy but the situation is quite difficult for me. I have a daughter (4 months old) who has got health problem – heart disease. I’m not playing only for the team here, I also play for money because I want her alive. The operation cost big money.

Salome, can you tell us how expensive is the operation and where the surgery must take place?

The operation is very complex and, unfortunately, it’s impossible do make it in Georgia. We need to go to Germany, where the operation costs 60,000 euros. We received a response from the USA, but there it costs about a million. Operation should be done before the end of March, but it is difficult to find such amount of money. I really hope that the operation will help, as no one guarantees the result, because it is very difficult to do heart surgery on a child.

Journalists appeal to the chess community, philanthropists and ask to help Salome Melia in her difficult situation.

Set up a pay pal account and make it easy

This was very easy to do via PayPal -- for a $30 donation PayPal added $1.47 in fees, and I was done in less than 5 minutes.

(In comparison, this would have taken hours of going to the bank, filling in documents, and the bank fee would have been as high as, or higher than, the donation money itself.)

I am so grateful to IM Christof Sielecki for thinking to set things up in a way that gives us, the chess.com community, a cause to unite for!  A true win-win!  Blessings!

Chess.com: can I please send you $100 from my cc, and you send it on? Sure many people would contribute this way.

Please help, people. This could save a little girl's life. Instead of spending 10 dollars on a couple of beers, or a weekend outing, give it to someone in need -- the child will be forever grateful to you.

I have decided to do my little part and give a hundred dollars. I will make up for this money by not eating out (I am a college student) but instead buying groceries and cooking cheaply for a week.

Do what you can, I urge you. Also, spread the word amongst your own chess groups, forums, facebook, and other friends so they can help too.

Just a couple of minutes ago Melia Salome has posted a paypal account on Facebook to donate to directly:

pojalusta sdelaite paypal parechislenie na ukazannom imeni. Olena Prusikin, email: hkiss@web.de

Lots of people donated to my paypal address, already mentioned in the comments here. More than 900 Euros I will now pass on to Melia, thanks for that! Please send more to the account above - of course any donations at my account I will also directly forward to her.

ChessExplained (IM Sielecki) is willing to send money for anyone who wishes (to avoid the transfer fee) and is willing to put up money of his own to help the young girl. Please help out if you can - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlvvvsZUIg4

Stop asking for a paypal account when you can already use paypal to donate money. Send it to C_Sielecki@freenet.de . He will even match your donation (within limits).

Well.. to be fair it probably costs a million in Germany as well, but the taxpayers carry a lot of the burden.  Anyway good luck to her.

Cant you withdraw money from a paypal account and then pay someone with it? The trouble with a bank account abroad is that the transfer may cost more than the actual amount given.

Sad that the Georgian government cant help. Also, It would be easier if theres a pay pal account, as that requires no transfer fee, that way she can transfer the money from paypal to her own bank account.

Or use the link that "Rozenwinkel" posted
