Kramnik v Aronian 2012 Zurich Chess Challenge.jpg

The Zurich Chess Challenge started with a decisive result in the first game of the 6-game match.

Despite having more match experience and moving first, Vladimir Kramnik suffered a rare loss with the white pieces.

World #2 Aronian won the theoretical battle in the opening, surprising his opponent with 16...Qe6 after which Kramnik fell into deep thought and well behind on the clock.

The Armenian played accurately to gradually increase his advantage, and when Kramnik faltered as the time control arrived allowing 40...g5, the game was over after just one more move.

Allows the bishop to be traded off for the knight after Kc5.  Anyone see anything else (either positive or negative)?

small correction-5.5 points to overpass Carlsen. He can do it. Carlsen almost does not play while Aonian is playing so frequently

"The nature of ratings means he will gain less for beating a now even lower rated Kramnik"

Not really, since they don't use live ratings but the official rating when calculating rating changes.

Re: "... now carlsen is 2835 & aronian is 2829. if he wins today he will become no 1"

Not possible. Aronian gained 4.7 points for the win. http://2700chess.com/

The nature of ratings means he will gain less for beating a now even lower rated Kramnik. It would be 4.5 points.  http://ratings.fide.com/calculator_rtd.phtml

Edit: Whoops. Fell into a trap. FIDE's published official ratings reused in the live rating calculation. Thanks to fabelhaft for making me look at it more closely.

I agree with several other members that f4 was the main mistake by Kramnik, he tried to win the game and end up losing it, he should have placed a blockade (with the Knight) on d4 and consolidated his position and played for a draw.
