Aronian Wins Rapid World Championship

Lev Aronian (pictured) made up for the disappointment of losing to Hikaru Nakamura in the Chess 960 championship in Mainz by winning the main event - the Grenkeleasing World Rapid Chess Championship.

The big shock occurred in the qualifying rounds when Vishy Anand - winner of the title for the last nine years straight - failed to qualify for the final after a disastrous start.

Anand lost to Aronian in his first game, and then to Nepomniachtchi in the second - both with the white pieces!  Although the World Champion won his third game, he left himself too much to do on the second day and he missed qualification for the final.

The results of the qualifying round-robin event:

Aronian, Levon   ARM   2768 *   *   ½   ½   1 ½   1 1
Nepomniachtchi, Ian  RUS  2632 ½  ½  *  *  1 ½  1 0
Anand, Viswanathan  IND  2788 0 ½  0 ½  *  *  1 ½
Naiditsch, Arkadij  GER  2697 0 0 0 1 0 ½  *  *

In the final Aronian won the first two games against Nepomniachtchi and drew the remaining two to take the title by a score of 3-1.

Meanwhile, in the ultra strong Ordix Open event - an 11-round rapid open with some of the best players in the world - Shakhriyar Mamedyarov finished top dog with a staggering score of 10/11!  Mamedyarov therefore earns the right to play in the Rapid World Championship event at Mainz next year.

The top finishers were...

1 Mamedyarov, Shakhriyar AZE 2717 10
2 Naiditsch, Arkadij GER 2697 9.5
3 Akopian, Vladimir ARM 2712 9.5
4 Gashimov, Vugar AZE 2740 9.5
5 Moiseenko, Alexander UKR 2682 9
6 Guliyev, Namig AZE 2555 9
7 Riazantsev, Alexander RUS 2647 9
8 Nakamura, Hikaru USA 2710 8.5
9 Sargissian, Gabriel ARM 2683 8.5
10 Bacrot, Etienne FRA 2721 8.5

Finally, after scoring an almost Fischereque 11.5/12 in qualification, Rybka wrapped up the Livingston Chess960 Computer World Chess Championship against Deep Shredder, by the comparatively modest score of 3-1 in the final.

Great Games! For all the Anand Comments- Everyone has an off tournament. Sure, this is top level chess, but it should show us that even greats can play less than perfect chess.

Aronian has made huge progress and he is ready to challenge for no.1 soon. I like his style :-) very crafty player...

Anand? i think he has a lot more to give and is still the best player in the world (IMHO) - he's had a few bad recent results, but i guess he is preparing for the WCC and not on individual tournaments.  Also - maybe he doesn't want to give away too much in his opening preparation.  Don't be so hard on him - I still take him to beat Topalov.  And 11 times winner?  He HAD to lose sometime!

Aronian,L vs. Nepomniachtchi,I: nice to see a reversed dragon, there was certainly a disproportionate amount of wins for whoever was black!

A shocking loss for Anand. He is known as the fastest gun in chess. The Mr.Lightning. Obviously, Vishy is not in top shape. 9 time winner of world rapid chess including last year Mainz finals against wonder boy Carlsen. Maybe, Anand is starting to focus his mind in his coming preparation to defend his world chess title against Topalov this year. After Anand played terrible in last Bilbao grandfinals, He showed excellent performance against Kramnik ,winning lopsided and undefeated in last years World Chess Championship.
