Blitz every first Thurday of the month

Check (and join) the Carver Center forum to stay on top of its activities. Starting this Thursday, we will organize a little blitz tournament with theme. This week : the Schliemann variation of the Ruy Lopez: 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 (The Ruy Lopez) 3...f5 !?

Show up prepared (the idea is to provide a structure to learn openings) and with a clock!

This coming November 5th:

IMPORTANT: you can show up at any time before the end of the tournament and be included!!! The pairing system is very loose and flexible.

This time we will try our hands at the Scotch opening. A deceptively simple opening used very succesfully by Kasparov and Carlsen

1.E4 E5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4! (ECO C44)

The only widely used answer is 3.. exd4 (3.. d6 4. dxe5 dxe5 5. QxQ+ KxQ puts Black in an extremely passive position. In practice White winning percentage is 80% )

4. Nxd4 is the "regular" Scotch opening.

4. c3 !? is the Goring Gambit

4. Bc4 is the Scotch Gambit
