Breaking News: Bobby Fischer's Inheritance Ruling

Since Bobby Fischer's death in January 2008, there has been an unpleasant and increasingly unseemly battle to gain control of his estate, estimated at $2 million.

An Icelandic Court ruled today that Miyoko Watai was legally Fischer's widow and should inherit his estate, estimated at $2 million.

Bobby's nephews had claimed that the marriage was not legitimate, but the Icelandic court ruled clearly against them and also ordered that they pay Watai's legal costs.

However, the lawyer acting on behalf of the nephews has already stated that there will be an appeal, so the desperately sad saga may not be over just yet.

Fischer would be really upset with his nephews and would probably say something racist about them.

a claim raised by children ( illegitimate or otherwise ) is a different matter. Most have been speaking here about claims from ' nephews ' on what is after all a relatively ninor estate. Much of this will likely be eroded by legal fees & nothing will be left but a bitter-taste in the mouth.

Atty. Sammy Estimo who claims to represent another illegitimte child of Bobby sired in the Philppines says that the fight is not yet over. Lawyer Estimo by the way was a member of the 1970 Philippine Olympiad Team.

In today's world ( that B. Fischer has now left ) we are supposed to be striving towards less beaurocracy & greater transparency in freedom of information.

Absolute scandal that legal processes have not embraced this & allow proceedings to drag on for years.

Surely, in today's world, such matters should be concluded timeously & perhaps ( in the States ) questions  may be asked whether it is morally appropriate for 'nephews' to even be able to pursue such an action ?

i admired bobby's skill on the chess board, but I also admired his candor when speaking about critical history, and government corruption.

Mr. Fischer was one of the greatest chess players of all time, but to describe him as "undefeated" seems to suggest that he defended his title at all, such a title, "undefeated world champion", should be reserved for someone who truly deserves it.

I am glad that this chapter of Mr. Fisher's storey is concluded (well nearly...). We await for the next chapter of the Bobby Fisher's Saga...

That's pretty cool. If I was the judge, I'd let the winner of a chess tournament win the inheritance ruling. Let each nephew play for oneself and the winner gets to move in with Aunt Fischer. I'm sure she can use another pair of hands keeping the estate tidy.
