Breaking News: Russians Nominate Karpov

Chess politics is not a subject that thrills the heart of many chess fans, but the importance of the future leadership and direction of the world's governing body FIDE is hard to overstate.

Candidates for the presidency have to be nominated by national federations. The backing of the Russian federation is a key decision, and the candidacy of the former Russian world champion raised the possiblility that they might back him instead of the incumbent president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.

Breaking reports suggest that Karpov has won the support of the Russians, which would be a huge blow for Ilyumzhinov and a massive boost for Karpov!

    Amusing to hear that Kasparov not only supported Karpov for FIDE presidency but also brainstormed with Anand on his World Championship. In politics there are no permanent friends or enemies, looks like it holds good for chess rivalries too Wink

    i come from an era when karpov and kasparov were rivals,when i saw them together and kasparov backing karpov for pres it just warmed me to see the politics of life and chess.

    Karpov is pragmatic and excellent diplomat. He is not "a fanatic, chauvanistic supporter of the Russian regime". Russian Opposition ,his former enemies Korchnoi and Kasparov support him.  Karpov really deserves the FIDE presidency.

    @Crazydiamond

    It seems once again the ability to accurately judge someone's state of mind eludes you. To assume I've been hurt in any way by either your supposed truth, or actual truth, only shows your own inability to understand other people's ideas or feelings. In all actuality I was tickled pink by your libel. You, my dear friend, are able to think whatever silly, preposterous and ridiculous notions you can come up with in that tender melon of yours. I am neither offended, hurt or in any way inconvenienced by your slander. I only pray that one day you will be able to enjoy life again without the nagging of the conspiratorial chatter that echoes in the back of your mind.
    Good-den to you my kind sir.

    Hopefully Karpov will put the integrity of the game ahead of personal profits and weed out all the corruption.

    "Well the Russians might be surely much better off in Chess than the mighty USA but of there is one thing in which USA beats any other country on this planet is how to wage proxy wars in other countries for the benefit of their elite and unfortunately most of the Americans are simply ignorant about it all..don;t believe me then watch Zeitgeist The movie to see the reality of the so called greatest nation on the Earth."
    Didn't yo mamma tell you if you didn't have something nice to say, don't say it at all? I love when people refer me to partisan things like books and movies as definitive proof that what they say is gold. "If you don't believe me then watch this politically biased movie that agrees with me!" It's also amazing that someone can know the intellectual level of 300 million people enough to say what most of them think and understand. Crazydiamond I have one question for you. Obsess much?
    Oh, and my vote for FIDE President... Chuck Norris!
    ~Common someone had to say it.

    "If the Russians are good at Chess, why did they lose the cold war" ?  What a ridiculous question.  The Russians are clearly demonstrively good at chess.  The Chinese are good at ping pong, the people of Kenya good at running.   These are simple national facts.  Each of these counties citizens are good at a number of other things.  Why does one have to state " who won the cold war" .  I was embarrassed but not surprised to see the US flag on the post.

    Karpov fits the FIDE presidency:

    * became champion in 1975 without facing Fischer

    * after 48 games, the 1984 championship was terminated without result thanks to FIDE president late compatriot Campomanes

    * awarded by FIDE to play for the title against co-Candidates-Match-loser Jan Timman in 1993 after Kasparov and Short broke away to form PCA

    ANATOLY KARPOV FOR PRESIDENT!!!

    Besides, Kirsan failed in his initial mission to repair the schism between PCA and FIDE.

    @Bamaknight

    Excuse my English, Maybe I should rephrase it as a "factual documentary" instead of a ""movie"" then maybe you'd like to have a look at it.

    Shine on..

    Russians were too busy playing chess instead of figuring out how to win the Cold War.

    Sorry, but I don't go to the movies to see reality.

    Earth governments are important, but Kirsan is supported by Aliens, Karpov has no chance.
