Caruana Wins Biel 2010

Submitted by SonofPearl on Thu, 07/29/2010 at 9:44am.

fabiano_caruana_Biel_2010.jpgFabiano Caruana (pictured) won the Biel Young Grandmasters Tournament after a three way play-off with Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son.

All three finished on a score of 5.5/9, and since the best mathematical tie-break belonged to Son, he waited to play the winner of a rapid match between Vachier-Lagrave and Caruana.

Caruana won the first rapid game, lost the second, but took the deciding sudden death game with the black pieces to progress.

In the final tie-break match against Son, Caruana nearly lost the first rapid game, but held for a draw before emerging a convincing winner in the second game to take the title.

The tournament overall was rather disappointing, with a high percentage of draws and some egregious examples of "Grandmaster Draws".  A big surprise from these young talents!

"Congratulations to Caruana for finally shaving that nasty gradu that was below his nose and above his upper lip."

Congratulations to you for noticing that and making me laugh out loud!  Laughing

Let them have their quick draws.  The champion anyway almost always plays for a win.  He could settle for one quick draw for strategic purposes.  But that doesn't make him a cheat.  Chess is the ultimate strategy game, on and off the board.  So live with it!

I couldn't care less about football, so I can't say it would bother me.  I was just making a point.  I see what you are saying about pre-arranged draws, but it's still part of it.  If chess players had mult-million dollar contracts like football players, I guess they'd be more inclined to fight it out.  The alternative for you is to stop keeping up with it if you are so bothered by it.  No football for me.  No chess for you!

@WebHead

Your punt bunt football baseball examples are the wrong analogy because they don't make immediate outcome like win,loose and draw. The correct equivalent is to gather the football team before the real game has started, shake the opponents hands and call it draw. Do you wanna see that in football??

As i have mentioned, I'm not against normal draws. It's quick draw or grandmaster draw that i'm against.

@BoyBawang

Get over it.  It's part of chess.  Your argument is like saying teams should never punt in football because that's not sporting or fighting, or like saying they shouldn't bunt in baseball because they should be trying to hit homeruns.  Professional chess players are trying to make money and if drawing secures half a point rather than risking a "0", I think it's understandable.  If a player wants to push for a win every game, more power to him.

You didn't get the point. I'm NOT against normal draws!  What i'm against is Quick draw or Grandmaster draw.

Look BoyBawang, the link I gave you IS by Silman and you can check it by yourself.

In your link IM Silman never criticizes draws made by professionals in a tournament.

I can understand you prefer to see a fight rather than a quick draw (I prefer that too), but this guys risk very much and sometime it is understandable they don't want to push too much in a position in which they don't feel confortable.

I haven't noticed you mentioned that the time would continues from where it was left.

This would be really unfair towards players who fight until the end but obtain a draw: they would be forced to play a blitz game in which the quality of the game would be terribly inferior.

Sofia rules are better to avoid early draws, but I don't think they should always be applied for the same reason pointed out by Silman.

GMs draws always existed anyway chess is still alive

@Nao83

Why last forever?? I mentioned that the time control will continue where they left therefore the match will just end along with the others.

Chess will die if we continue tolerating Gm draws. Had they implement short draws in boxing it would have been dead decades ago.

BTW your link is not by Silman. Silman HATES quick draws in the link below!

Premature draw are part of the game. Would be unfair to punish them.

IM Silman explained this very well in

BoyBawang a tournament would last forever if for every draw another game should be played.

Well done Fabiano, way to go

...and also happy birthday: 18 ys today!!

Very bad tournament example.  So many playable games ended in Quick Draws. Quick Draws promotes Fixed Draws and should be banned in chess.  So unfortunate because the solution is very easy:

Just let them play another game with time control based on the remaining time when draw was agreed. If the additional game still ends in quick draw, they will play again if necessary until they reach Sudden death.  The official game will be the last game played because the previous ones are not worth reviewing.

Caruana gave Truong Son a neat endgame lesson.  What a way to play with just a knight and extra pawn.  Great win!

Caruana played great! Well unfortunately, it is not the Event for our Pride (So) besides Caruana really excel in the Tourney and He deserves it. Actually my bet in this Tourney was 1. So 2. Caruana 3. Nguyen, and lucky I am the top 2 and 3 are the ones who played in Finals.

Congratulations to Mr. Caruana
