There were two fireworks and a damp squib in the fifth round at MTel. Ivanchuk and Shirov both had the White pieces against the sharp Sicilian Najdorf and both replied with 6.Bg5. However, neither managed to win!

Veselin Topalov finally won his first game at Mtel 2009 when he swept aside Wang Yue. Topalov created some very nice play on the queenside and won convincingly in 33 moves.

Poor Chucky. Maybe he's playing too much chess and needs a break for his own good.
In round 2 at the Mtel Masters, Ivanchuk lost a game with White against Wang Yue in a game he really should have drawn.

The 'Swiss System' isn't an ideal format for a national championships (are ANY ideal?) but it usually produces bloody battles at the start of a competition, and the 2009 US Championships is conforming to that expectation.
