Larry Evans.jpgChess Grandmaster, 5-time US Champion, journalist and popular chess columnist Larry Evans has died of post-operative complications following gall-bladder surgery in Reno, Nevada.  He was 78 years old.

Evans was born in New York in 1932 and developed his skills at the Marshall Chess Club during his teenage years.

In 1951 he won his first US Championship, ahead of Samuel Reshevsky, and would go on to win the title a total of five times.

Despite his personal success as a player, he was better known for the assistance he gave to Bobby Fischer during his career, and his close involvement with creating Fischer's "My 60 Memorable Games" book.

Evans was also an accomplished writer on the game, as a journalist and columnist for newspapers and chess magazines.

Rest in Peace, Larry Evans 1932-2010.

    Many years back I read one of his books "Modern Chess Brilliancies" that featured collection of excellent games till 70s. That included best periods of Tal and Fischer. More importantly his selection of games and presentation are superb. A good player and a great contributor to chess.

    @Vaaelenko -

    I don't think anyone was implying he was the creator of the Evan's gambit (a gambit played prior to the birth of Evans.) Nor is anyone implying you need to be credited as the creator of opening to be a significant chess player.

    Nor does someone have to be a grandmaster, or even a chess player, to have their life commemorated. I found your post very disrespectful.

    Evans was also responsible for many of the editions of "Modern Chess Openings" (prior to DeFirmian).  I still have my MCO 10 (1965) Walter Korn, Editor, revised by Larry Evans.

    right why do they call him a legend ??? he didn't do anything :S

    and he is not the creator of Evans gambit

    Evans Gambit were created by Giuoco Piano as I think or by  Davies Evans

    I read the book 'the crazy world of chess' wrote by Larry Evans. The book is great. It inspired me to continue playing chess in great ways and I will still continue to play. You also been a very great friend to Bobby Fischer.  R.I.P. Evans. You are a legend.

    A lot of my generation fell in love with chess because of Bobby Fischer, but it was Larry Evans that taught us how to play the game.
