ChIP Example

Can you recite the six steps yet?  Okay, okay, I'll repeat them:

(1) Evaluate. (2) Identify needs/dreams. (3) Determine priorities. (4) Set goals. (5) Make action plans. (6) Implement.

Now let's look at an example: (1) You evaluate your game and realize that your opening is weak. (1) You identify the fact that you know only part of one opening (Ruy Lopez), and you don't know it thoroughly. You identify the need to study and improve your current opening and add one more opening. (3) In thinking it through you realize that it will be more confusing if you try to do both at the same time, so you decide to focus first on strengthening your Ruy Lopez. (4) You set a goal to read 4 articles about and study 10 games each week using the Ruy Lopez. You are consistently going to start your games as white using that opening. (5) You decide to read 2 articles during the week and 2 during the weekend every week for two months. You decide to annotate all of your games using the Ruy Lopez and to seek other games by other players (for a total of 5 during the week and 5 on the weekends). (6) Then, you actually do it. Over the 2 months, you begin to understand weak moves you were making in your opening. Your opening begins to improve.

How about sharing your plan?

(1) Excellent tactics (that's all I used to study), strategy might be my weakest point (I am working on it), okay endgame, and great at openings (about half of my books are on the opening; need to focus on other aspects).

(2) Need to improve strategy, to add to my opening repertoire (not a priority), improve my Sicilian Defence and King's Indian Defence (both) as Black (also not a priority), improve endgame, and continue to improve tactics. My dream is to someday become a NM but that's unlikely to happen due to the amount of time I have for chess.

(3) Strategy and endgame +tactics

(4) Study strategy using "Simple Chess"  and "My System." (still waiting for it to be delivered), Work on the endgame using "Endgame Challenge" and "Turning Advantage into Victory in Chess." Continue on tactics using "Chess" -(Laszlo Polgar) and using the tactics server.

(5) Work on endgame and tactics for the next few weeks. Then stop studying endgame and work on strategy. Work on at least ten tactical puzzles a day until school starts. Play at least a few games each day (FICS and Infinia). And always try to play opponents who have higher rating than me. Also try to analyse a few of my games after I play them and study IM and GM games too.

(6)  Let's see what happens...
